Benefits and Properties: In the most common traditional usage, Palo Santo wood is burned as an incense for the facilitation of renewal in an energetic and spiritual sense. It is understood to provide a form of clearing and to attract beneficial forces. In a day-to-day context, the smoke is still used in local communities as an effective mosquito repellent. The essential oil is even more effective than the smoke for immediate headache relief. Especially at early onset, rub a drop of the oil in the palms of your hands and deeply inhale.
About the Plant: Palo Santo is a small tree from the tropical dry forest of Northern Peru and Southern Ecuador. From the same botanical family as copal, frankincense and myrrh, palo santo is a keystone species with a dominant presence in the ecology of the tropical dry forest, where it perfumes the breeze. In addition to the well-known aromatic wood, palo santo also has a highly aromatic resin that exudes from wounds to the bark and broken branches.
